When these death minions are killed, their corpses will release a toxic gas that continues to protect the Necromancer. So the Necromancer, which is linked to the Witch class, can gain a skill to summon a wall of death minions. The new Ascendancy classes rely on your character’s existing class and enhance the specific skills that said class is known for. You could start out with a character who is good with magic but eventually turn him or her into a melee-loving brute. According to Grinding Gear Games, these classes, which are added to your existing character’s class upon completion of the labyrinth, are meant to address a common criticism of the game.ĭue to the level of customization available in Path of Exile, certain classes tend to bleed into each other. Just clearing the labyrinth for the first time will unlock the expansion’s new Ascendancy classes. The main takeaway in Path of Exile: Ascendancy is the battle for rewards. It’s worth noting that the labyrinth won’t be random on a per-player basis - instead, every player will get to play through the same randomized dungeon (complete with leaderboards). This will create a different exploratory experience that should entice Path of Exile die-hards to come back again and again.

Each day the game generator will put together a set of developer-created assets, forming a dungeon in the process. Though Path of Exile: Ascendancy may not be a massive story expansion, it will invite players to return on a daily basis. Just like the rooms within, these boss battles differ on a day-to-day basis, meaning that you’re never sure what the good ol’ emperor will have planned next. You’ll also encounter Emperor Izaro on three separate occasions, every time you enter the labyrinth. There are even spinning blades on the ground which must be avoided and dart shooters which make you tread carefully while being on high alert.Īt any given moment a room within the labyrinth could include multiple combinations of these traps in addition to various enemies, thus making your progress a hard-fought ordeal. You’ll also find lava that rises at specific intervals, tasking you with hurrying as you traverse enemy-filled rooms. Certain rooms will have tar spread across the floors, slowing your movement and making combat more difficult. The exact types of obstacles you have to look forward to are about as vile and sinister as you’d expect. This then forces you to take what you learned in the trials and put that knowledge to use in grand fashion. Though the trials feed you the basic environmental puzzles and traps in an easy-to-digest manner, the labyrinth doesn’t shy away from mixing two or three combinations of these obstacles in any given room.

These trials introduce you to the new types of puzzles, traps, and enemies that are prominently featured in Path of Exile: Ascendancy and act as a tutorial for the full labyrinth later on. More importantly, you’ll reap some serious rewards for your character. Survive those challenges and you’ll get to face off against Izaro to claim the title of emperor. Apparently he’s looking for a worthy successor, so he’s set up a labyrinth, dubbed The Lord’s Labyrinth, filled with challenges. Path of Exile: Ascendancy is based around a man named Emperor Izaro. And given the daily challenge-esque design of the expansion as well as the various character rewards available, it’s clear that Ascendancy is meant to keep fans busy. The developer’s next bit of content, Ascendancy, isn’t as bulky of an expansion, but there’s plenty incentive to keep players coming back. The last expansion to the free-to-play ARPG, The Awakening, offered up a host of fresh new features big and small that enhanced the overall experience. I’m constantly impressed by Grinding Gear Games’ willingness to reward Path of Exile players with new content.
